4 Signs Your AC System is Making You Sick

Air conditioners need regular maintenance, just like the many other systems that keep your home up and running. Aside from extra costs and hassle, not keeping your air conditioner maintained can pose some risks to your health. The dirt and bacteria that can build up in your unit and the filter can seriously make you and your family sick. Let’s go over all of the unpleasant signs that your air conditioning system is making you sick, and it’s time for a professional to take a look.

1. Breathing or Respiratory Issuesthermostat set on 63

The most common sign that your AC system is making you sick is breathing or respiratory problems. When the system isn’t cleaned properly and filters aren’t changed regularly, the system can breed bacteria and fungi, and even black mold. Black mold can cause coughing, wheezing, and other respiratory issues. If you’ve experienced these symptoms and suspect there is bacteria or fungi in your AC system, contact our team immediately.

2. Dry/ Itchy Skin

You may be using your air conditioning system at too high a frequency if you regularly experience dry/ itchy skin and you spend a majority of the day inside. The lowered humidity in the air can cause your skin to become dry and cracked. If you’re extra sensitive to dryness, try using a humidifier along with your AC unit.

3. Fatigue and Headaches

Fatigue and headaches can be common symptoms for those who spend most of their time inside a building with an air conditioning system. Our best advice is to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day and take breaks by stepping outside. These two solutions should keep fatigue and headaches at bay.

4. Frequent Doctor Visits

Do you find yourself visiting the doctor more often than you should for cold-like symptoms? The culprit may be your air conditioning system. As we mentioned earlier, bacteria and fungi love to breed in dirty air conditioning units and, depending on what kind, can make you feel really sick. If you’re visiting the doctor with cold symptoms at a higher than average rate, give us a call to check out your unit.

If you experience any of these symptoms, especially during the summer season when air conditioning units are being heavily used, contact the 6 & Fix team.
